Communication Literacy

Communication literacy means ability to speak well, listen to others effectively, read with fluency, understand what they have read and be able to write skillfully and with a sense of style. (Whitehouseps)

According to UNESCO’s definition, communication literacy is “the ability to communicate well with others and to know social practices”. It is very important for socialization and interpersonal interaction. (Ghasemi H & Rasekh N. 2020)

Objectives of Communication Literacy

The objective of communication literacy is to make sure that students will accurately understand and express information and ideas. The students will be able to communicate with one person or in groups. They can use various modes of communication such as written and spoken words, visual images, sound and symbols. (SHANE BOGE'S PORTFOLIO)

In today's technological world communication literacy enables people to use technology to communicate wisely and with much caution.

How can communication literacy help students?

  • To access proper information
  • Search on web such as google, Yahoo, Bing, etc
  • Be aware on the purpose and the audience
  • Appropriately use social media - Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Clubhouse, etc
  • Emails for sending files and saving them
  • Video calls
  • access to photos and videos
  • online classes
  • be aware of scam
  • download ebooks

For example, students can watch the videos on Youtube, learn from them, and comment on them. So, students are learning, and also expressing their views at the same time.

Another example is blog writing. The blogs are read by students or any reader. They express their views or give feedbacks which helps the author to make improvisation.

Likewise, Facebook is another popular social media these days. It is not only used for posting photos but it has also been used for educational purposes. The 'Facebook Group' is formed to meet certain objectives. The group members post information and they interact with each other.

After the covid-19 pandemic, physical learning methods have been severely affected. So, online education is prevalent these days. Students learn, interact through mobile and laptops. Webinars, online workshops, conferences, and the use of mobile are excessive among students and teacher educators. (Baral, 2021). For example, zoom meetings are popular these days where a large audience participates in learning and meetings of the organization. Through Skype, viber, facebook messenger, Instagram, Tiktok, clubhouse, and several other social media people interact with each other globally.

Today, children and youth need to understand the integration of knowledge from sources such as music, videos, online databases and other media, they also need to know how to use those resources to disseminate and share knowledge (Digital literacy) When texting friends or messaging on any social media, certain and appropriate words must be used.(Prezi) When we talk about communication literacy in the digital world two things must be considered - one is skills needed to access the information and another is to process that information.
