 Course on  Hand washing

Day 1     Importance of handwashing

In simple words, handwashing means washing hands with soap and water. It is an act of cleaning hands to remove viruses, bacteria, or microorganisms. It is also known as hand hygiene. Handwashing is an easy and cheap way to reduce the transmission of infectious diseases. Washing hands prevents respiratory and diarrheal infections from one person to another.

Germs can spread from other people or surfaces when you:

  • Touch your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Prepare or eat food and drinks with unwashed hands
  • Touch a contaminated surface or objects
  • Blow your nose, cough, or sneeze into hands and then touch other people’s hands or common objects (Centers for Disease Control And Prevention)
Among many other reasons, bacteria and viruses cause fever and death. Thus, the simple act of handwashing can be a powerful way to protect from the transmission of infectious diseases. According to Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, nearly two million young children die each year from illnesses that can be prevented by washing hands with soap and water.
